Organizers of VGMA have never been fair to me - Gasmilla

Hiplife musician Gasmilla, known in real life as Milla Lamptey, is lamenting that organizers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) have ignored his hard work as a musician.

Gasmilla believes the VGMA organizers have been unfair in failing to recognize his work.

The 'Telemo' hitmaker made the comments when he was on Hits FM's Showbiz Review with Mic Gizo. He was answering questions on why he has never had any music awards nominations.

He said, “in a way, they've never been fair to me but I'm a hard worker, I'm a studio rat but I'll keep coming regardless and a time will come that they won't have a choice but to give all to me but if you think these are bangers, wait for what I'm bringing.”

Continuing, the ‘International Fisherman’, who is almost always away in the UK playing shows, disclosed that there are lots of shows for artistes in the UK because that country is the second country aside Ghana that loves 'Azonto'.

He however stated that he was never going to settle in the UK like some artistes who get a huge following there do because he is a king in Ghana.

He said, “never because I miss the 'kenkey', my friends, the studio where I have fun. All these make me want to come home so the longest I can stay in the UK is a month or two.”

Gasmilla, who now seems to have the mantle of 'Ga Rap King' passed on from Tinny and Screwface said, “I believe kings are born and from my first song, people call me king of 'Azonto'. I was born a king and I believe I've been destined for greatness.”

20 Rappers And Their Lovely Little Girls

People get so caught up admiring celebrities for their art and their sex appeal that they rarely stop to think about the star’s family life. Just like everyone else in the world, hip-hop stars have spouses and homes and broods of children too. Lots of famous hard-rhyming rappers like to make music about gorgeous ladies, but things change for them and for their fans when they’ve got beautiful baby girls and gorgeous ladies of their own. Here are some of the rap world’s most beautiful daughters.

Blue Ivy Carter

There is nary a kid in the music industry with such a talented and hugely famous set of parents. Blue Ivy is still a little girl, but you could easily bet she’ll grow up to have her daddy’s swagger and her momma’s good looks.

Hailie Mathers

If you listen to the music of Eminem, then you are undoubtedly familiar with the name of his baby girl, Hailie – but she’s not a little girl anymore. Having just turned 19, Slim Shady’s daughter has definitely proved to be one amazing combination of genetics.

Cymphonique Miller

As she’s garnered a following of her own from her time on Nickelodeon, most people probably don’t know that Cymphonique Miller has a famous father. Her dad just happens to be the rap legend Master P.

Destiny Jones

Rapper Nas may not be as popular as he once was, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a lot of good things going on in his life. The biggest of these blessings is certainly his beautiful daughter Destiny, who has grown up to be quite the young woman.

Reginae Carter

Also known as Baby Carter, the daughter of the tattoo-covered Li’l Wayne has grown up to share her father’s interests. Reginae has made plans to one day become a famous rapper in her own right.

Karma Bridges

Not too much is known about the daughter of Chris Bridges, aka Ludacris, other than the rapper/actor recently won the custody battle for her. He also has a second daughter named Cai Bella and another baby on the way with his current wife.

Bria Williams

Lots of rappers are marked with the mantle of “thug” but that doesn’t mean they are hard through and through. Rapper Birdman has been known to be a big softie when it comes to his baby girl, Bria.

Iviona Hatch

Like lots of celebrity children, Iviona Hatch, daughter of rapper Lil’ Boosie has plans to become a hip-hop star like her dad. In 2013, she released her very first single “This Can’t Be Happening“.

Toie Roberts

Plenty of dads love to spoil their daughters, and rapper Rick Ross is no exception. For his precious Toie’s 13th birthday, he threw a Chanel inspired Parisian-style soiree complete with celebrity guests and expensive swag.

De’jan Nicole, Cypress Soleil Lee, Story Asaundra, and Dream Sarae Lumpkin

Rapper Tonya Lumpkin aka SolĂ© has two daughters from her first marriage, De’jan and Cypress. After she married fellow rapper/singer Ginuwine she had two more girls, Story and Dream.

Omoye Assata Lynn

Common may be a newly minted Oscar winner, but that isn’t his only great accomplishment in life. If you want to see how amazing his life is, just look at his lovely teenage girl Omoye.

India and Siaana Lane

When it comes to attitude and style, rapper Tiffany Lane, aka Charli Baltimore, isn’t the only one in the family who happens to be gifted. Her teenage daughters India and Siaana definitely give their mother a run for her money when it comes to being fabulous.

Willow Smith

Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith are mega super stars and their son Jaden is becoming quite the famous rapper/actor himself. And even with all that fame and power packed into one household, daughter Willow has still found a niche for herself, working on her rapping/singing career.

Deyjah Harris

Rapper T.I. has an infamous temper but what people usually see is nothing compared to how defensive he gets of his children. When a man unwisely made uncouth comments about Deyjah on Twitter, T.I. laid into the attacker, to put it mildly.

Heaven Epps

Tauheed Epps, aka 2 Chainz, may be a big deal, but to daughter Heaven she is still just “Daddy”. She may still be very young but he has been known to take her anywhere including important awards shows.

Angelina Jean

Wyclef Jean’s daughter Angelina may be adopted, but she is clearly his little girl. Growing up so fast, she now appears with her father at concerts and music festivals.

Madison Taylor

There has been a lot of recent speculation about whether or not Madison is the real daughter of Joycean “The Game” Taylor. Whether she is or isn’t the rapper’s biological daughter, the girl is a real cutie pie.

D’Lila Star, Jessie James, and Chance Combs

Sean “Diddy” Combs has a whole heap of kiddies at home – six in total. Three of those children are adorable little girls Chance and twins D’Lila and Jessie.

Italia and Samaria Smith

LL Cool J is famous for not only being a rap star, but being a highly successful actor as well. The one thing he isn’t that well known for, but should be, is for creating two daughters who are as beautiful as he is talented.

North West

Even if you don’t know what Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are famous for, you’ve probably learned through osmosis about their precious little girl. Most people have low opinions about the kind of people her parents are, but there’s no denying how adorable little North is.

Comment: Protracted Vodafone Ghana Music Awards! Who takes the blame?

The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards which came off last Saturday at the Accra International Conference Centre has been labeled by a section of the general public as “boring” citing the long duration of the event as the reason.

Arguably, the change of acts and a possibility of artistes exceeding the time allocated to them to perform were some of the factors that led to the dragging nature of the event.

However, I suggest that the event dragged because some personalities who were called upon to present awards ended up giving long, needless and unscripted speeches.

I observed that some spent more than three minutes on stage before going ahead with their main purpose. And since they were on live television, there was very little the organizers could do. Should we blame event organizers for this? I am sure they knew exactly what to do on stage. Why then did they digress knowing that people were there mainly because of the awards? Why didn’t they go straight to the point, in carrying out the main purpose for which they were on stage than commenting and lecturing on issues not so related to the music fraternity?

When Freddy Anang, a UK based businessman and Ghanaian actor, Lydia Forson were called to present the Gospel Song of the year award, they spent three minutes talking about something unrelated to the event before calling for the nominees to be shown on the screens.

While Mr. Anang was singing praises to himself, Ms. Forson seized the opportunity to remember the 147 lives lost in Kenya. And I am sure you remember her saying, “I’m not supposed to do this but I’m on a live TV…they can’t kick me out”. Well…

Ace broadcaster, Abeiku Aggrey Santana was on stage with Gospel artiste, DSP Kofi Sarpong to present the award for Best Collaboration. To my utmost surprise, he ended up giving a political speech and sang praises to some industry players for four minutes. Was that scripted? Did the organizers ask him to do that?

President of the Musicians Union of Ghana, Bice Osei Kuffour, popularly known as Obour before presenting the Gospel Artiste of the Year award used three minutes to inform the audience about what his administration has achieved so far plus his decision to contest for the MUSIGA presidency for a second time.

I ask: couldn’t he have been brief enough? I am sure he could have compressed his long speech into his last statement, “I’m happy to announce and I’m inspired that the journey continues; the work is still on…it is not complete until it is complete. Come election, I will make myself available to contest for the presidency of the Musicians Union of Ghana”. The list goes on and on and on. But check this out!

When movie producer and actor, Yvonne Nelson and former Big Brother housemate, Bassey were called upon to present the Best International Act award, there was no delay. Same as Chief Marketing Director of Vodafone, Agnes Essah and Deputy Minister for Culture, Creative Arts and Tourism, Honourable Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare who presented the Most Popular Song award.

Actor, Christabel Ekeh and Victoria Michaels who presented the award for New Artiste of the Year spent less than a minute in doing that. So why couldn’t the others stick to the purpose for which they were on stage?

I am not saying there should not be that flexibility for presenters of awards to say something than to present the awards. Before they went on stage, they knew exactly why they were there. Why then should your “speech” be that lengthy? If all the presenters of the awards had stuck to their purpose on stage, I am sure they could have saved us an hour. And this could have saved the “boring” image of the show.

Actors need formal education in the profession - Grace Nortey

Veteran Ghanaian actress Grace Nortey has advised all actors to have at least some formal education in the acting business before involving themselves full time.

She expressed her concern about how “some people” are gradually undermining the noble profession with the perception that there is no need for a formal education.

According to her, “acting is a bit easier and lucrative, but it is not something one could do for the rest of her life. Acting is seasoned, for about ten to fifteen years one will still not be the strong person as she used to be”.

Grace Nortey disclosed this in an interview with Selasie Ibrahim on ‘Smart People’ on GTV while describing how some actors become hopeless and jobless when they stop acting.

She explained that acting can be a hobby but one needs formal education for a better experience. She added,“you cannot get up one day and say I am a star. It’s impossible”.

She used the opportunity to advise women in the movie industry to work hard and respect themselves.

The veteran actress also advised that those who are married should discuss the scripts they get with their husbands. “Whatever roles you are going to play, let your husband know. Tell your husband the whole show”, she added.

Grace Nortey, who has been off the scene for a while now, said old age and ill-health have caught up with her and they have slowed her down.

Speaking to Dj Murphy Lee on Storm 101.9 Entertainment Extra, Sherifa firstly thanked Wanluv Kuborlor for including her among various artistes who featured on UNICEF’s ambassadorial project. She further emphasised that she doesn’t think she is still a Glo ambassador though she hasn’t written any letter concerning her resignation & also revealed come 18th April 2015, a company from UK will unveil her as their ambassador at the National Theatre.

The most thrilling part of the interview was when she boldly revealed her ambition of becoming the next Artiste of the Year.

‘My next album is coming out in two weeks time with ‘Krakete Soya’ as the title. Next year I’ll win the artiste of the year whether rain or shine. Oh! Seriously, am going to win…believe me…am not joking. I have already prayed for it,’ sherifa courageously noted.

When that happens, she will set two records; the first female artiste/first traditional female artist to win the overall top award in Ghana.

Seven Up! director Paul Almond dies aged 83

Paul Almond, the Canadian director behind the groundbreaking Seven Up! documentary, about a group of British children, has died aged 83.
The 1964 television documentary later gave birth to the Up series, which has followed the children into middle age at seven year intervals.
Almond, who helped come up with the original idea before Michael Apted took it on, died on Thursday in California.
His son Matthew said the cause was complications of a recent heart attack.
Seven Up! examined the British class system through the eyes of 14 British seven-year-olds from a range of different socio-economic groups.
The 40 minute black and white film featured Almond asking 10 boys and four girls a series of questions about family, class, religion, happiness, love and their adult aspirations.
He and a Granada producer Tim Hewat came up with the idea in an English pub where they had been chatting about the class system.
Hewat is said to have uttered the quote: "Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man," supposedly originated by the founder of the Jesuits, St Ignatius Loyola.
The film was originally intended as a one-off and Almond returned to Canada where he directed many films and TV programmes, as well as writing novels.
Apted - who was a researcher on the original film - decided to revisit the children every seven years, and went on to direct 7 Plus Seven (1970) and 21 Up (1977) right through the the most recent film 56 Up in 2012, seeing the children through jobs, marriage and parenthood.
They included Cockney lad Tony, who became a jockey and then a cab driver; Suzy, a girl from a privileged background who became a wife and mother; Nicholas, a farm boy who is now a scientist; and Neil, from Liverpool, who endured homelessness as a young man.
Back in Canada, Almond wrote and directed a trilogy of films on mystical themes, called Isabel, Act of the Heart and Journey - starring his second wife Genevieve Bujold to whom he was married to from 1967 to 1973.
He had also directed a version of Macbeth starring a young Sean Connery for Canadian television in 1961 and episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
The director - who studied at Oxford University - also helmed several British TV programmes for the BBC, Granada and other studios.
Later in life he became the author of the Alford Saga, eight historical novels based on the lives of his pioneer ancestors in Canada, including The Deserter and The Survivor.
He was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2003 but retired to Malibu, California.
Almond is survived by his third wife Joan and his son, three stepsons, a stepdaughter and eight grandchildren.

Digital music matches physical sales for the first time

Digital music revenues matched physical sales for the first time in 2014, thanks to strong growth in the streaming market.
The digital market rose 6.9% to $6.9 billion (£4.6 billion), representing 46% of all global music sales, reported the music industry body IFPI.
CDs, vinyl and other physical formats also accounted for 46% of the market, with rights for performances, films and advertisements making up the rest.
But overall revenue slipped by 0.4%.
Pharrell Williams's Happy was the most-downloaded single globally in 2014, with Taylor Swift the most popular artist, the IFPI said.
The London-based body also noted that vinyl sales had increased by 54.7%, and now account for 2% of global revenues.

UK sales drop

The global recorded music industry was worth $14.97 billion (£10.1 billion) last year, down from $15 billion (£10 billion) in 2013.
Although the rate of decline has slowed since the mid-2000s, it is the second consecutive year of falling music sales.
A brief upturn in 2012, when global revenues rose 0.3%, now appears to be an aberration.
Pharrell's hit single Happy sold 13.9 million copies in 2014
But the picture varies from country to country. The US, the world's largest music market, saw an overall increase of 2.1%.
Japan, where falling CD sales have dragged down the global industry in recent years, saw an increase in digital revenue for the first time in five years, as streaming services gained a firmer foothold.
Other large markets saw declining sales - including France (down 3.4%) and the UK (down 2.8%).
And 37 countries - including Sweden, Mexico, Spain and South Korea - saw streaming revenue overtake download income.

7) Rock or Bust AC/DC 2.7 million
8) Guardians of the Galaxy OST Various 2.5 million
9) The Endless River Pink Floyd 2.5 million
10) Pure Heroine Lorde 2 million
Overall, last year saw a steep increase in subscriptions to streaming sites such as Deezer and Spotify, with revenues increasing by 39% to $1.57 billion (£1.06 billion).
That offset a decline in download sales, mostly derived from Apple's iTunes store, which fell by 8%.

Untapped potential

The IFPI estimated that, out of the 100 million people who use streaming services, just 41 million were paid-up subscribers, with the rest accessing free, ad-supported streams.
Its annual Digital Music Report said there was "substantial untapped potential for growth within the paid-for category".
The market is still expanding, with new players such as Tidal expected to be joined by an Apple-branded streaming service later this year.

"I think we will be looking, in the next couple of years, at digital surpassing physical," said the IFPI chief executive, Frances Moore.
"We are seeing that streaming is really leading the digital market, and we can imagine a time when digital will be the majority of music sales."
Sony Music chief executive Edgar Berger added: "The industry has shifted from an ownership model to access. I've not met anyone who can see beyond streaming. So this looks like a final destination".
But the IFPI also called on European lawmakers to clamp down on sites like YouTube and Daily Motion, which claim exemption from liability when users upload videos containing copyrighted music.

EU tackles Google over shopping service search results

The European Union has filed a complaint against Google over its alleged anti-competitive behaviour.
The competition commissioner said she had issued a "statement of objection", stating that the firm's promotion of its own shopping links amounted to an abuse of its dominance in search.
Margrethe Vestager said Google now had 10 weeks to respond.
She added that she had also launched an investigation into Google's Android operating system.
And the commissioner said the EU would continue to monitor other activities by Google that its rivals had complained about.
It follows a five-year investigation into the company and could ultimately lead to billions of euros of fines.
Google has yet to give an official response, but has told its staff that it has a "very strong case".
The Commission is responding to complaints that Google, which accounts for more than a 90% of EU-based web searches, favours its own products in search engine results.

'Preferential treatment'

The European Commission has investigated the antitrust allegations - made by Microsoft, Tripadvisor, Streetmap and others - since 2010.

The EU has objected to the way Google promotes results from its own shopping service
They object to the fact that the firm places adverts from its Google Shopping service ahead of others' links in relevant searches.
"At the core must be the fundamental principle that Google must not abuse its power in general online search to give preferential treatment to its own separate services," Icomp, a lobbying group representing the complainants, said earlier this year..
"If Google takes the view that users are best served by search results that integrate additional services, Google must choose the services that benefit consumers most, even if the services are not its own."
Last year, Google agreed to alter the way it displayed its search results, but the changes it suggested were deemed to be insufficient.
The previous competition commissioner, Joaquin Almunia, asked the company to come up with a new plan.
He left his post without resolving the matter, and was criticised by some politicians for not having taken a firmer stance.

Legal requirement

Ms Vestager, his successor, has taken a tougher line by issuing a "statement of objection".
This involves sending a letter that sets out all the objections the commission can base its final decision on, and is a legal requirement, providing Google an opportunity to respond before action is taken.

Margrethe Vestager announced the action against Google at a press conference in Brussels
Google could face huge fines and be ordered to reshape its business in Europe.
In recent years, the Commission has imposed antitrust penalties on other tech giants, ordering Intel to pay €1.1bn (£793m; $1.2bn) in 2009 and Microsoft €516m in 2013.
However, Ms Vestager said she was "open" to Google's response, and wanted to listen to its case before deciding how to proceed.

'Example'

Thomas Vinje, spokesman for FairSearch Europe, said issuing a statement of objections would "represent a significant step towards ending Google's anti-competitive practices, which have harmed innovation and consumer choice".
But one independent expert said that the matter could take years to resolve.
"Google's search engine makes it a gatekeeper to different markets in which Google itself also operates," said Paul Henty, a lawyer at Charles Russell Speechlys who has previously worked for the European Commission.
"I think the Commission will want to send an unequivocal message that it has a special responsibility to give its rivals fair and equal access to customers.
"But I can't see that this will be a fast process given the complexity of the subject matter, what's at stake and the likely level of the fine."
In an internal memo to its staff, Google insisted that competition to its search business was "thriving" despite allegations to the contrary.
"People can use Bing, Yahoo, Quora, DuckDuckGo, and a new wave of search assistants like Apple's Siri and Microsoft's Cortana," it said.
"In addition, users increasingly turn to social networks like Facebook and Twitter to find news and suggestions - where to eat or which movies to watch.
"[And] mobile is changing everything - with the explosion of apps taking people directly to the information they want."
Google insists rival services, including Microsoft's Bing, provide users with an alternative despite its dominance of web searches in Europe

International inquiries

The EU's investigation is not the only one Google is facing.
Investigators at India's Competition Commission delivered a report last week after carrying out a three-year probe into claims of unfair business practices.
Their counterparts in Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Taiwan and Canada have also opened investigations.
However, the US Federal Trade Commission dropped its own probe at the start of 2013 after Google made several non-binding commitments.

Ebola survivors 'safe sex warning' issued by WHO

The WHO has urged Ebola survivors to be even more cautious during sexual contact to ensure the virus is not passed on to their partners.
The warning comes after a survivor was found to have traces of Ebola in his semen almost six months after recovery.
This is some 90 days later than previously documented.
It is unclear whether Ebola can still be spread at this point. But officials have launched further investigations to evaluate the risks.

New evidence

There have been no proven cases of Ebola being transmitted through sexual contact with survivors during this or previous outbreaks.
But according to Dr Nathalie Broutet, a medical officer at the World Health Organization, the recent case prompted experts to strengthen their advice.
Dr Broutet told the BBC: "The patient is the first we have seen where there is a trace of virus present in semen beyond three months.
"This made us change our recommendations to go beyond three months."
The new advice says: "For greater security and prevention of other sexually transmitted infections, Ebola survivors should consider correct and consistent use of condoms for all sexual acts beyond three months until more information is available."
It builds on previous guidance suggesting abstinence or safe sex up to 90 days after symptoms first develop.
But Dr Broutet cautioned further analysis must be done.
"Even though the sample was positive for fragments of the virus this does not prove it was passed on sexually.
"We need to be very careful and need more clarity about this," she said.
Scientists are planning to send the sample to the Centres for Disease Control in the United States to see if the traces of Ebola they found are active and capable of being spread.
And Dr Broutet is helping to set up studies in Sierra Leone and Guinea to offer male survivors further checks.
According to the WHO, there is no current evidence to suggest that active Ebola virus is present in vaginal fluids once someone has recovered.
Ebola is known to spread through close contact with the bodily fluids of a person who has the active virus and shows symptoms of the disease - such as a high fever.
Experts emphasise that people who have recovered from Ebola do not pose any risks to the general public and should not be isolated.

Sex makes me get ‘high’ - Okyeame Kwame

Popular musician Okyeame Kwame, widely called the ‘Rap Doctor’, has opened up on his sex life, revealing he neither drinks nor smokes and that sex is what gets him “high”.

As a result, he said he always disturbed his wife for sex.

Okyeame made the comment when he was speaking on ZTV last Wednesday.

He was on the TV network with wife, Annica Nsiah Appau, to talk about their experiences as a couple.

“…How about my relentless libido? You know I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I get my high from ‘radom radom zo,” he said when he reacted to the wife’s comment that she found no difficulty being married to him.

“When I met my wife, she was covered from her neck to toe. She was wearing a black dress that covered her neck to toe. Then I saw the beauty on her face and her hips; I knew that she was the one.

“When I started talking to her, she was so intelligent. I remember when I went to my mum to tell her I wanted to marry Annica, she asked me why; I said because she is intelligent,” Okyeame added.

According to him, the first day he met Annica was the same day he proposed marriage to her. Interestingly, she asked him to go home with her to see her father, which he did that very day.

He was then wearing dreadlocks and Annica’s dad asked him to take it off before he would allow him to marry his daughter.

Both figures said they have trusted each other till date.

The rapper, known in real life as Kwame Nsiah Appau, and his wife celebrated their sixth-year marriage anniversary on January 17, 2015.

They are currently happy and their marriage is an inspiration to many young ones who look up to the rapper.

US soul singer Percy Sledge, famed for his song When a Man Loves a Woman, has died aged 74.
Steve Green from talent agency Artists International Management Inc confirmed to the BBC that he died at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Tuesday.
"He was one of my first acts, he was a terrific person and you don't find that in this business very often," said Green. "He was truly a standout."
Sledge had surgery for liver cancer in January 2014 but soon resumed touring.

Sledge's debut single When a Man Loves a Woman reached the top 10 twice in the UK and topped the US Billboard chart for two weeks in 1966, when it also got to number four in the UK chart.
During an interview for the the 2013 documentary Muscle Shoals, he recalled his first recording of it.
"When I came into the studio, I was shaking like a leaf. I was scared," he said, adding that it was the "same melody that I sang when I was out in the fields. I just wailed out in the woods and let the echo come back to me".

'Signed away the rights'
He told BBC Radio 6 Music's Craig Charles in a 2011 interview that he came up with the melody for When A Man Loves A Woman, but signed away the rights of the song to Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright, because "I didn't know any better".
"I had the melody in my mind so I gave that song to them," he said, adding they then created the lyrics.
Sledge did not contest the agreement, saying: "I felt like if God fixed it in my mouth to give it to them I won't change anything about it.
"I'm satisfied with what I wrote but I cut my kids out of so much because I gave it to someone else - I just wasn't thinking."
BBC Radio 2 DJ Tony Blackburn was among those paying tribute on Twitter, and said: "Sad to hear that Percy Sledge has died. I wonder how many times I've played When A Man Loves A Woman. RIP."
Musician Bootsy Collins paid tribute on his Facebook page with the words: "Just lost another legend funkateers, Mr Percy Sledge."

Paul Gambacini told the BBC that When a Man Loves a Woman was "one of the all time classic songs".
"This was the essence of soul, dripping with feeling. It never had a time, it was in a world of its own, so it was timeless," he added.
The track reached number two when it was re-released in the UK in 1987 after appearing in Oliver Stone's film Platoon, and was featured in several other films such as The Big Chill, The Crying Game and a 1994 Meg Ryan drama named after the song itself. It was also the soundtrack to a Levis advert in 1987.
'Transcendent moment'
It was the first US number one recorded at Alabama's Muscle Shoals studio, where Aretha Franklin and the Rolling Stones would later record.
The track also scored a first gold disc for Atlantic Records, whose executive Jerry Wexler called the song "a transcendent moment" and "a holy love hymn."
It remained Sledge's biggest hit and helped sustain a long touring career in the US, Europe and South Africa, averaging 100 performances a year. His other chart successes included Warm and Tender Love, It Tears Me Up and Take Time to Know Her.
The song found new life in 1991 when Michael Bolton's cover of the song topped the Billboard chart.
Before his music career, Sledge worked in the cotton fields around his hometown of Leighton in northwest Alabama, before taking a job as a hospital nurse in the early 1960s.
A patient heard him singing while he worked and recommended him to record producer Quin Ivy.
The singer was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 and was a member of the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife and children.
